Airport Travel with an E-Cig

edited January 2011 in The World of E-Cigarettes

There have been a few questions lately, and there will continue to be. Can I travel with my E-cig/PV and supplies? The answer is yes...for now anyway. You'll be pleasantly surprised that the answer to most of your questions are, yes you can : ) Here is one of the links that I have used on ECF to get my answers (see below) ; this one is a "sticky" with great info. But search the site, I use "airport TSA" using the "advanced search" and clicking on "posts" to find many on-going converstations with constantly updated info, from airport employees, TSA agents, and traveler's personal expieriences. Very interesting reading for anyone traveling via airports and planes.

I've decided to make it a little easier for people here, to access this info. So I pasted the list from ECF (e-cigarette forum) This is from "13ways" (his ECF name) So here you go. But please go there, to get up to the minute info, as "13ways" keeps this list updated. We know TSA can and does change the "prohibited' list, from time to time.

    TSA and the Ecig FAQ

Earlier today it was suggested that I make a FAQ about going through TSA checkpoints with a PV and after much deliberation, 30 seconds of thinking I am too lazy to do that, I have decided to write down a few things that I have noticed people worrying about.

First things first though, a little about me. I am an officer with TSA and work at the Orlando International Airport (MCO) and have been there for about a year and a half. I also worked for Virgin Atlantic Airways from 2001 till 2005 before I was laid off. I can answer most questions about going through security with your preferred method of vaping and/or your everyday items. If you have a question that is not covered in this FAQ feel free to ask me.

Can I bring my eliquid with me on the aircraft?
Yes you can with no problems as long as it is in a container that was commercially labelled at 3.4 ounces (100ml) or less or the container obviously could not hold more than that (I.E. the little bottles that come with Johnson Creek orders). Just please put it in a quart size clear plastic bag with your other liquids. If you do not have any you can ask someone when you get to the TSA checkpoint and they should be able to give you a ziplock bag.

Are there any problems with bringing my PV through TSA checkpoints?
None. They are not a prohibited item in any way shape or form. Though they do look rather ominous on the xray screen the most you will ever have to go through is to answer a couple of questions about what the device is as they go through your bag to see the item and/or run a test on the bag. If you want to completely avoid any interaction with the TSA officers I would suggest separating the battery from the atomizer and run it through the x-ray with your keys and other metal objects in your wallet. Keep in mind this does not hide it so they may stop the x-ray to take a look at it but it is not in a bag and therefore can just look in the container to see what it is.

    What about my prodigy/GG/SD/etc?
Same as above. I think you may have less issue with those because the batteries would show up as batteries and not how the standard ecig shows on the x-ray but just like I said above if you want to avoid talking to an officer then separate the atomizer and run the whole thing separate from your bags.

I have a container of eliquid that is larger than 100ml what should I do with that?
Wrap it up tightly and very securely and put it in your checked bags. After seeing the bag room at MCO and how the equipment treats bags I would steer away from putting it in any case that relies on latches to close. The latches fail way more often than zippers do when they get hit by the "kickers". They are not called "kickers" because they gently nudge your bag, I have seen quite a few bags with latches get knocked and burst open spewing unmentionables all across the baggage area so please keep that in mind. That is also why you should never over stuff your suitcase.

what about my PCC? would that cause a problem?
Nope, none at all. It is nothing more than a battery box with some storage in it after all. I have not seen one on x-ray but I doubt it would look too bad.

    What items are prohibited?
there is a list of items at TSA: Prohibited Items   (put your cursor over the "TSA" it's a link to the offical site)

Once again if you have any other questions feel free to ask me. I will add to this as I see more questions people have. These were just the questions that I came up with off the top of my head.

Something else I found and thought I'd share: I'll put acual link at the bottom; to the ECF site. There are some great pics that go along with it : )

Questions and Answers About E-Cigs and Liquid concerning TSA.

OK, we have some moderators here that travel extensively and have taken E-liquid and E-cigs on air travel. I am going to try to explain some do’s and don’ts for air travel and the E-cig through TSA check points.
Please understand TSA agents are not exactly up to date on their own regulations at times and this is by no means a 100% safety guide for E-cigs and Liquid. This is posted solely from our experience travelling though the TSA check point.
Jim D, RIA and I will be updating this.
OK, we get a lot of questions concerning E-liquid and having it in your carry-on. Currently there is no restriction with the TSA concerning carrying on E- Liquid or E-cigs through airport security. Now actually using it on board is regulated by individual airlines and not a topic of this post.
You are allowed 3.4 Oz in an individual bottle which equals approx 100cc of liquid, we recommend not testing the TSA’s and bringing attention to the E-liquid by pushing the limit and bringing attention to your e-liquid. Try to keep it in 10, 20 or max 30cc bottles. I routinely carry 2 X 15cc and a 3 cc bottle in my carry on.
You are allowed to carry rechargeable batteries.
I recommend disconnecting the batteries from the atomizer when you have it scanned through the check point, no need to have a accidental fire up of the atty’s during this procedure.

    OK some links:

    TSA Liquid carry-on rule:
TSA | Transportation Security Administration | 3-1-1 on Air Travel
    TSA prohibited Items:
    TSA: Prohibited Items

and here is the link where I got this:

Thanks, Vapetress, this is great. That TSA guy is in my hometown, too. Maybe I'll meet him next time I fly out of MCO. LOL
  • VapetressVapetress Posts: 1,073Member

That's funny, just look for the guy who looks like he's "stealthing"...you know what to look for...you know the sigs LOL

  • CarolGCarolG Posts: 562Member
Yeah, and if I go through his line maybe I can avoid the full body scan or assault, um I mean pat down.

  • VapetressVapetress Posts: 1,073Member

LOL Well I'll never avoid those pat downs, cause I have a Neurostimulator Implant (see Google and/or Medtronics). So I can't go through the metal detector, or have the "scanner" used on me.

On the plus side, I get to the front of the line, a whole lot faster, and an wheelchair escort LOL. See there is always a silver lining : )

So, that's for chronic pain? Wow, I'm sorry to hear that! But you're always so upbeat, I never would have known it!

You have RA Vapetress?    It runs in my family but so far i escaped it.. but I do have to battle with OA...

  • VapetressVapetress Posts: 1,073Member

Carol: Yes, for chronic pain. Thanks for the "upbeat" comment. I try, I think a positive attitude and a sense of humor, are key, to a better life : ) I don't usually talk about it, cause I don't want to "feed it" if ya know what I mean?

Story: Well yes, I do now, in my spine. That's what happens to an injured joint or disc. Of course we all know that heredity is a major factor. Mine is caused from the injury thogh. No family history here, thank goodness : )

great post. funny i just traveled through Orlando (MCO) with my V2 in my carry on, might have seen 13ways there haha.

but no issues what-so-ever, TSA looked at the v2, i told them what it was and they moved on. got funny looks from people while using it in the terminal, but thats no different than anywhere else (most people still havent heard of e-cigs). i also used my v2 on my flight with no questions, concerns, etc from any other passengers or the flight crew.

    long live the e-cig! :D
  • VapinitaVapinita Posts: 746Member

Was watching Leno tonight. He made a joke about the all of the weather-related flight cancellations and said the TSA had nothing to do so they're offering to come to your home to do pat-downs.... they're calling it FEELS-ON-WHEELS!  LMAO

that is good to know! I am going to Orlando in April, good to know they are down with the e-cig! Will they mind if I say "mind if I vape while you feel me up?"
  • VapinitaVapinita Posts: 746Member
If they do a really good pat-down job on you, you'll certainly want to vape afterward. :))
  • VapetressVapetress Posts: 1,073Member
Vapinita: considering, I always, require a "pat down search" for my "paticular situation" I just joke with them. I tell them, "nobody gets this far, with me, withoutr paying for dinner and dessert".Most of them, have a sense of humor, and that goes a long way, with TSA.
  • VapinitaVapinita Posts: 746Member

A good sense of humor makes life bearable. If I'm not having fun at something, then I don't want to BE there at all.

  • VapetressVapetress Posts: 1,073Member
    I heard that!!!!
  • CarolGCarolG Posts: 562Member

kreit, how long are you going to be in Orlando? Is this for vacation?
  • kreitmayerkreitmayer Posts: 428Banned

@CarolG my husband has a business trip and i am just going along for the ride. So he is working, I am vacationing!

  • CarolGCarolG Posts: 562Member
Nice, kreit. Have any plans, or are you just going to sit and vape by the pool? If you want to meet up, let me know.
  • @kreitmayer: Sounds like you will be "vapor-cationing" haha (vaping and vacationing at the same time, get it?) I'm such a cheese-ball!  :-))

LOL traveling and vaping...can life get any better????? LOL : )

  • LeifLeif Posts: 120Member

    I think not, Vapetress!

I just stepped off a 12+ hour flight from new york to china -- stealth vaped the whole way, with a V4L stealth battery (no LED at the end, and a marble-ish black and green pattern). Nobody even noticed!

No questions whatsoever through security either.

  • VaperLoverVaperLover Posts: 491Member
Just read an article on Carol's page about the Dept. of Transportation banning use of e cigs on all US Flights. Very disheartening. They say that they "interpret" smoking regulations to include e cigarettes and that they'll add that to the official language this spring. Geez...just when I thought I might be able to tolerate a flight somewhere. Can't stand the pat downs, the way they hold you hostage once you pass through security, they just hold you at their mercy. And now, they take away my vape! This sucks.
  • MzMaryMacMzMaryMac Posts: 32Member

@VaperLover-I posted a link to an article about that earlier today and am quite surprised there aren't more of uf up in arms about the whole thing!  How can they possibly interpret non-smoking laws to cover e-cigs???  There is no smoke.  There is no flame, fire, smell.  Heck, there isn't even tobacco.

I think there should be a study done on the negative effects of e-cigs before anyone can tell us they are bad for us or should be illegal.  This is really ticking me off.  If the airlines start with this, then others will follow suit.

Someone needs to send a free starter kit to Obama.  Maybe he will make the switch and help our cause!  LOL!

  • CarolGCarolG Posts: 562Member
VaperLover, I saw that link from MzMaryMac and that's where I got it for my blog. So, thank you MMM.

And I agree, if we could get Obama to make the switch that'd be great. But some security guy would probably intercept the package and have it blown up, thinking it was 'suspicious.'
  • VapinitaVapinita Posts: 746Member
I heard a news story last week saying that Michelle Obama had said that he quit smoking a year ago. Just what I heard... don't know for sure.
  • VaperLoverVaperLover Posts: 491Member
I saw that news story too Vapinita. Maybe he's already secretly using a e cig!
  • VapinitaVapinita Posts: 746Member
    LOL!!!!  Maybe so.  :-j

Hey ya'll got sick, found out it was Gall Bladder, had to have it out in emergency surgery, then recuperating at home. If this would have happened any later, it would have screwed up my trip to Mexico. If you recall I'm heading out for Ixtapa Mexico March 16th, that's this Wed : ) The thought that this could have happened in Mexico is scary : ( On a positive note, I can now add stealth vaping in a hospital to my ever growing list of places I have stealth vaped : ) 3 days, and never got caught, and they come in like every 10 to 15 min.
Well anyway, like Leif, I too have the Stealth cig. by V4L (no led on the end and it's black with little green flecks on it, cool looking) I plan on stealth vaping (I'm sitting next to the window in a 3 seater row, next to hubby and friend) all the way to LAX, then on to Ixtapa Mexico. Thanks to Stephaine, I have plenty of Carto's for my 2 weeks in Mexico. Don't even know if they have e-cigs and carto's in Mexico, and even if they did...not sure I would want to Vape them LOL ; ) Anyway, missed chatting with ya'll while I was sick. When I get back from vacation, I'll be back here on a regular basis.
  • CarolGCarolG Posts: 562Member
Welcome back Vapetress, we missed you! Sorry to hear you had emergency surgery, yikes! So glad it didn't mess up your trip, though. Have a great time in Mexico!

I saw a story some time ago that the premise for the aircraft ban on vaping is that it is a fire hazard!!!!!
  • MikeMMikeM Posts: 59Member
    Fire hazard my eye!
Seriously, I'd bet my eye these things don't pose a significant enough fire hazard.  They don't even get as hot as a cup of coffee.

    ... just sayin'

I traveled from 4/1/2011 - 4/8/2011, after ban.  Zero issues with carry on, and vaped discretely in the airports and on the planes.  Made travel a breeze.  Just made effort not puff before inhaling, maybe held in a little longer, and blew vapor downward.  No one noticed a thing.
  • VapetressVapetress Posts: 1,073Member

Hey Vapetress here, sorry I've been very busy since I returned from Mexico. I stealth vaped in the airport and on the airplane with no problems at all!!! : ) This was the easiest flight I've had since they banned smoking on planes LOL ; ) Yes, for all you "younsters" you used to be able to smoke on planes : ) Thanks to V2, if you "stealth vape" (put you V2 on your lanyard, and when no one's looking take a puff, and hold it in, if you can't do this, go to the bathroom from time, and NOT blow it, for the rest of us) no one knew or noticed a thing...it was awesome!!!! Did I say this was the easiest flight I've had since 1989 on flights of  6 hours or less, and 1993 for all US flights??? Oh yes...I believe I did!!! Thanks V2, I have now vaped in stores, cars, friends homes, hospital room (that was fun : ) and now, yes the airplane, yah!!!!!

On a flight to Jamaica, they just look at you and say "YEAH MON"  assuming its a ganja pipe

  • StorytellerStoryteller Posts: 563Member
@MikeM - Actually the coil inside the cart will normally reach around ~400 degrees as you vape. If you could see inside you would actually see the wires glowing red hot at times.. So yes it does get very hot and if a flammable gas should reach the coil inside the cart it could cause an explosion. Now with all that being said I am pretty sure that the odds of that happening are higher than the odds of you gettin struck by lightning!!

@Vaptress.........I'm a "gimp" also and although I would love to be able bodied again being a gimp has certain advantages when flying.  I got the hand pat-down once in Philadelphia and the TSA agent took my drivers license AND my boarding pass and disappeared for about 7 minutes while I quietly panicked.  It all turned out ok but when I returned from my trip I sent Homeland Secutiry a letter with a picture of my grey-haired self sitting on my scooter.  The first line of the letter was"Do I REALLY look like a terrorist?".  Someone there replied very nicely about the rules and that no one should have taken off with my credentials under any circumstances and that they would investigate the incident.  Looking back at the incident it's funny now but not so while it was happening.

This is all very good information since I was just having this discussion with a friend who is flying home in a week and was wondering if vaping would be an issue.  Said she would be very ticked if they took her ecig!  I'll be telling her no worries when I talk to her later.  Thanks everyone :)

sweet you work un the orlando airport? I just went through it two days ago. im on vacay to disney for a few days so im here charging my dead batteries with the usb port on the laptop - and vaping my morning e-ciggie lol
I had no probs going through the metal detectors and I vaped in the airports waiting for the plane. I think it's only illegal so far to vape on the plane, no? Well anyway, vaping is great because im around all these little ones all day long and now I dont have to worry about stinking them up and polluting their air :D yay for v2!

This is my 6th week of full time vaping but I have flown about 8 times with my carts and batteries in my carry on and haven't had any issues at all. So far its still illegal to vape on a plane but I have vaped in the airports. I love the looks I get from people when they see a cloud of vapor.

I am happy to say that I was able to be on a visit back to the U.S.A. to deliver a dog to my mother as well as to pick up my V2. I have been 100% cig-free since.  I was so looking forward to being able to go from plane to plane vapping and not having to go through the security check points, just to be able to rush down an anolog cig.  I had a 6 1/2 lay over in Dulles Int. after disembarking the plane I immediately grab my V2 and started vapping.  The look on face's "priceless"  and almost instantly the announcements started coming across the P.A. system "this is a non smoking facility......." I smiled and continue on my way, and vapping. I started noticing an increase in airport security and the smoking announcements playing almost non stop. Then an agent walking towards me makes eyecontact and begins to slow as if he is gonna stops me then smiles and says "AH a V2 congratulations!! enjoy your flight."  Announcements stop and I continue to vape very openly about the airport for the rest of my lay over.  However on the plane I did ask the flight attendent and she informed me that it is UA's policy that no smoking devices are used in transit. OK so I did some home work before my flights and knew that I could sneak off to the bathroom and enjoy vaping on my 10 hour flight back home.  The next time I go to visit family I will not use an American air-line most European carriers allow you to use e-cigs in transit and they offer free glass of wine with your meal.  I look forward to many more instances where I am stopped asked and educate about such a life changing product.  I did give alot of info on V2 during this trip I hope they use it and take the plunge.   I can't stop thanking V2!! THANK YOU!!  I would like to be able to find somewhere local to find some ejuice as the shipping and handling is almost the cost of the product, so if any of you know of or live in the Netherlands info would be greatly appreciated.
